Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 - Determine Cellular Capabilities

Here's how to tell what your Galaxy Watch Active2 can do when your phone is turned on or off.
Your Galaxy Watch Active2 can be paired to a companion Android™ smartphone or Apple® iPhone® or be used as a standalone device and can be used with or without its own phone number in both of those scenarios.
Refer to the info below on how your Galaxy Watch performs for:
  • Initial Activation
  • Calls
  • SMS Messages
  • Third-party App Notifications
  • Email

Initial Activation

  • Smartphone must be:
    • powered on.
    • have the Galaxy Wearable app installed.
    • on Android 5.0 or later or iOS 9 or later.
    • connected to Wi-Fi or cellular network.
    • connected to the watch via Bluetooth®.
  • Both devices (smartphone and watch) must be charged and kept close together while they are paired and synced.

Calls (Incoming/Outgoing)

The watch doesn't support answering calls while paired with a non-Samsung smartphone or Apple® iPhone®.
  • Smartphone:
    • can be powered off.
    • doesn't need to be within range of the watch.
  • Watch must be connected to Wi-Fi or cellular network.

SMS Messages (Send/Receive)

The watch doesn't support replying to text with an Apple iPhone.
  • Watch must be connected to Wi-Fi or cellular network.
  • Smartphone:
    • doesn't need to be within range of the watch.
    • must be powered on.
The watch can send SMS messages while the smartphone is powered off; however they are sent from the watch's mobile number rather than the smartphone's number.
  • For issues receiving messages, refer to this Samsung article to ensure notifications in the Galaxy Wearable app are on for your messaging app.
  • If you're using an Apple iPhone with this watch, disable iMessage to receive all text messages as SMS on your watch.

Third-party App Notifications (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.)

  • Watch must be connected to Wi-Fi or cellular network.
  • Smartphone must be on but doesn't need to be within range of the watch.

Email

The email function isn't supported on watches while set up as a standalone device or while connected to an Apple iPhone or non-Samsung Android smartphone.
  • Smartphone must be:
    • powered on.
    • have the Galaxy Wearable app installed.
    • on Android 5.0 or later.
    • connected to Wi-Fi or cellular network.
  • Ensure Bluetooth is enabled and connected on both the watch and smartphone.
