Switching to a new device, traveling or troubleshooting a connectivity issue? Learn how to quickly and easily insert or remove the SIM card for your Apple® iPad®.

Before you begin

Don't attempt to insert or remove the SIM card while your iPad is powered on, as doing so may harm the SIM card and / or the device.
iPad Pro / Air (2024) and newer devices do not have an option for a physical SIM card and can only be activated with an eSIM.
Based on the iPad model, refer to Remove or switch the SIM card in your iPad to determine the SIM tray location.

Steps

  1. Use the SIM eject tool (or paperclip) to unlock the tray by inserting it into the provided slot.
  2. Remove or insert the SIM from / into the SIM card tray.
  3. To insert the tray back into the iPad, align the slot then press in on the tray to lock it into place.
    With the iPad screen facing up, ensure the SIM card tray is inserted with the SIM ID on top and gold contacts facing down.
